Culture & History
Are you a lover of culture and history? Then you are in the right place in Breda. The city has rich and varied museums that are certainly worth a visit, such as the Stedelijk Museum Breda (formerly Breda’s Museum and MOTI). Recommended also are the Beer Advertisement Museum (Bierreclamemuseum) and Museum of War and Peace (Museum Oorlog en Vrede). Breda’s castle is also enjoyable to visit. Located in the middle of the city center, it is accessible only for organized tours. These are coordinated by the tourist information center (VVV Breda).
One of the most famous monuments in Breda is the 15th-century church known as the “Grote Kerk” or “Onze Lieve Vrouwen Kerk,” which is open to the public and located on square of the Grote Markt. You can also climb the tower of this church for a small fee, and enjoy an impressive view of the city.
The city also has much to offer in terms of nature, such as various parks where you can stroll or enjoy a picnic. Breda has several lakes (the Galderse lakes and Asterdplas), perfect for cooling off in the summer heat. It is enjoyable to explore Breda and the vicinity by bike. The tourist information (VVV Breda) has compiled several bike (and hiking) routes.
You can also enjoy the area by boat, by booking a boat tour. These are available from the end of March through the end of October. Or you can rent a dinghy yourself to explore the water around Breda independently. No boating license is required!
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to nightlife in Breda. You can enjoy one of a variety of productions at the Chassé theater, an exciting evening in the Holland Casino, or you can see one of the newest films at the Pathé movie theater.
Naturally Breda is also known for her many restaurants, bars and cafes that are easily found in one of the many streets and squares in the city center.
You can sample delicious wines at wine bars such as Pinot on the Grote Markt or DENOVO on the Vismarktstraat. At the Boterhal on the Grote Markt you can enjoy a variety of international finger foods paired with a large variety of specialty beers.
If you like Argentinean grill, then Restaurant Gauchos comes highly recommended! For a more casual atmosphere, we recommend the pub (eetcafé) De Lamme Goedzak. The owner comes from Belgium, so naturally they serve a wide variety of Belgian beer.
The restaurant De Drie Vrienden in the Sint Janstraat is also extremely popular, par excellence! This restaurant serves portions the size of appetizers, so you can order several small dishes from the menu, allowing you to taste a broad range of delicious morsels.
Breda is a shopper’s paradise with some shopping malls such as de Barones and the shopping area’t Sas in the city center. The shops are open every Thursday night until 9 PM, so you can extend your enjoyment. Most shops in the city center are also open on Sunday from noon until 5 PM.
There is also a farmer’s market every Tuesday and Friday on the Grote Markt from 9 AM until 1 PM. There is also an organic farmer’s market that is fun to visit. This takes place on the Veemarktstraat square every Tueday from 9 AM to 1 PM.
